What else can be done instead of going to gear drive?

With all the cam tensioner taking a shit and people going to gear drive, is there something else we can do, I thought I heard about a new hydraulic set up we can go to that may be cheaper.?

Yep. HD has one and Andrews has one. I personally like the Andrews one better.

Harley does make a hydraulic upgrade to the cam chain tensioners. Depends on what year bike you have, you may already have them. I believe they went to them in '07.

Search ebay for harley cam tensioner. Saw the new hydraulic setup for about 365. But personally...I love my S&S gear drive and new 510g cams that I had installed about a month ago.

Not sure the hydraulic set up is cheaper. I think both upgrades are pretty close cost wise.

I'm assuming you have an 06 or earlier.

If you've got an '07 or newer bike, you've got the hydraulic setup. Unless you're going big with a build, I wouldn't change it. If your bike is older and your crank is within spec, gears are nice. If your crank isn't in spec, but isn't too far out, the hydraulic kit from Andrews is much less expensive than splitting the cases and getting your crank trued.

I was going to say, 07 already has the hydraulic setup. Don't worry about it, you are in the clear. A bud of mine checked his tensioners at 34k and there was no wear at all. Of course all bikes are not exactly the same but it does seem that they hydraulic setup has taken care of the cam chain tensioner problem.

I got the gear drive set at phat performance parts (best price that I could find) for just a little over 600 with free ship. I went with screamin eagle adjustable push rods/covers for 136.00 (ebay). Then added the daytona tec fuel manager. for about 200. I really love the increased torque and throttle response. I didn't know what I was missing. Also the gear driven cams are included in the kit. Bike runs a lot better now. Especially when hitting the mountain roads or passing cars on interstate without having to gear down. Go this route and forget about it! I would like to put 100K on this bike! I've put 11K on it since I got it in April. Look at my avatar and you'll see what shape my tensioners were in when I had them replaced. I also didn't have any idea that they were this bad. No noises or anything. Best money I've spent. Heated gloves/jacket is a life saver too!
