What does to "jail break" your iPod mean?

I don't want to do it or anything. I just read an answer to another question and they said you could just jail break your iPod. I'm just curious.

it means you can run 3rd party applications on it, and usually people do it on their itouches and iphones. Basically it gives people the option to use themes and get access to extra apps along with regular apps and music for free.

it lets you put non-approved, non--apple software on it like gameboy emulators, etc. just like hacking a psp or unlocking a phone.

JailBreaking your iPod refers to doing a software hack on the unit so it is able to load software not authorized by Apple. It generally doesn't damage the unit, it is just not approved by Apple.
