what does this quote from Abraham Lincoln mean?

“The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
 
It's just a very poetic way of saying that the memory of these brave men who gave their lives to protect our freedoms should bring out the best in us.
 
I believe he was saying that exceptional people will recall those who came before them and there cause and will answer the challenge causing everyone to take notice and answer that same call.
