what does the media (news) do to make people think looking like celebrities is good?

I am trying to figure out why people mimic idols because they want to look like them due to being concerned about how they look in society and how does the media change what people think by reporting about celebs. losing weight or getting a new channel purse. etc etc. I dont know if I am making sense just trying to figure out something for an essay and one of the things is to explain why people believe the media is right when it comes to "how you should look"
 
The media is harsh on celebrities who are super thin or even ten pounds overweight. The ones who photograph well are praised.

It is a sickening trend in our world and especially in America. Young girls are harming themselves to conform to a false image of what a woman should look like. It's all shallow and perverse and the only thing that will change it is some terrible event to bring focus back to the things that really matter in life.

I hate it more than I can express.
