What does the future hold for users not "on the cutting edge"

I truly believe that the "majority" of Nokia phones 5 years from now will be touch screen.


Lets go back apx. 5 years ago when Motorola was big with the RAZR. I remember like it was yesterday when I was complaining (on a different site) that the RAZR needed a much better camera. I was basically complaining for a 2MP instead of the VGA that was being used. I had a very similar debate with someone where I said 2MP cameras should be the standard in the the next few years and the other person thought I was out of my mind that ANY camera (even less than 2MP) would be on the majority of phones today. If you don't have a camera on your phone today then you probably are going for the Zach Morris retro cool look. :lol:



Anywhoo... IMO most kids today want touch screens (with slide out QWERTY if possible) even on feature phones. My friend's daughter (not even a teenager yet) last year for her birthday begged and pleaded for a Samsung Impression. I was showing her my e71 and she wanted the bigger screen because all her friends had the bigger screens.

My niece won't even use her iPod touch anymore because she got spoiled with the HD2's larger screen.


My father (Mr I still think I need to rewind a DVD when I'm done *sigh*) still would rather make a call on my Android Milestone than my e72. The e72 is 10x easier than an Android menu phone to make calls, but for whatever reason he likes pushing numbers on the dialing screen instead. Go figure.


The only real exception to the touch screen IMO is Blackberry because it's still very popular, but if a phone like the Blackberry Torch takes off (unlike the Storms) then IMO it might be the final nail in the coffin.


Sure there will still be flip phones 5 years from now, but Nokia doesn't really do flip phones. So that's why I think the "majority" if not all will be touch screen 5 years from now and most will be running on S^3...
 
Sure S^3 wont be cutting edge. But it will be on touchscreen only phones. This was my point. I guess people fall into 2 categories. 1- if you believe that S60v3 is still around in 3 years then it will HAVE to be on non touch screen devices. 2- you believe that S60v3 is not going to be around, then S^3 or something else would be on Nokia's mid to low range phones and all of Nokia's phones would then be touch screen only. I fall into category #1.

I've carried my n82, n97, and now my n86 in my pocket, with nothing but a screen protector. All are, or were in excellent condition. How do you carry a phone of that size when your wearing jogging shorts or a swimsuit. You must be one of those guys that wears a belt to the gym or pool???

I was just pointing out in my original post, my hope that things would trickle down to mid/low range phones. The N95's camera was one of the best cameras out there. That camera module will show up in more and more mid priced phones in the future. Simply because the "cutting edge" will have an 8 or 12 mp camera w/HD video recording. I remember having a 2gb card in my Tmobile SDA and thinking that was great. When I had my N97 w/16gb micro sdhc card, I had 48gb's of memory available. Now that memory is cheaper, I can see all phones in the future having some type of built in storage. 4gb or 8gb minimum.

I spent the last year trying out different phones. Some were decent, some were awful. But, the one thing I learned about all of it, is I just wanted the phone to work. I wanted it to do the things I needed it to do, when I needed it. When I really broke it down, most of the phones out there are filled with stuff I dont need.

I don't need a 4" screen. (or a 3" or 3.5")
I don't need a qwerty keyboard (T9 may not be perfect, but it gets the job done)
I don't need hdmi output.
I don't need 12 mp camera (really 5mp is enough. lets perfect that)


What I need is:
A phone that makes and receives calls. (clearly)
A phone that can merge my mp3 player, camera, and gps into one device.
A phone with a battery that can last a day, or at least have a battery I can swap out during the day.
A phone thats not so large, I can carry it in my pocket at any time, with any attire.
A phone that allows me to communicate via email and twitter easily. But doesnt need to take the place of my laptop or desktop.
A phone that does all of these things, without slowing down. With enough processor speed and memory to make me forget that I'm using a cell phone to do these things.

Thats all I want. and I think I have a better chance of getting it in the next 3 years, than I do chasing all the shiny new toys that come out every few months.
 
I totally agree that people should get phones based on their needs.

Btw my phone stays in the locker in the gym and on the patio table near my swimming pool....:p
 
e71 ftw. you know what be a cool phone? an e71 with the same qwerty board and a 3.5" touchscreen. and same battery life. i have a nexus one and the touch got old real quick. it's only cool for web browsing now and even then a dpad would be cool most of the time. the nokia n8 phone with the hardware keyboard looks mighty tempting.
 
LOL you leave it in your locker because its too big to fit in your gym shorts pocket. Try leaving it on a table anywhere but your own backyard, and someone will swipe it. Another bonus of having a non cutting edge phone. Nobody wants it, even thieves.
 
^ Almost... e72 with the same qwerty board and a 3.5" touchscreen. and same battery life. e72 is much better IMO than e71 for battery life + better processor that's why. (with 256mb version of memory installed)


I was actually thinking about this the other day. I still love my e72 as my work phone, but if you could touch screen it.... GAMECHANGER!!!...
 
I never liked dialing on my E72 either. Even though the number keys were a different color, it just didnt seem as easy as the large buttons on my n97 or even the small buttons on my N82.

Of course touch screens are poplular now. Only because of the iPhone. But where does the touchscreen go from here. In my opinion, it can only get bigger. And for some (more than you think), bigger is not always better. One of the main reasons I got rid of my N97, was the size. I dont want to carry around a brick all day. Granted, the keyboard added to the size. But there is no way to make a 4" touchscreen device compact. (especially if you add any protective cover) My brother got an iphone 3gs a few months ago and put it in an otter box to protect it. The thing is huge, he has to carry it on the belt clip because it wont fit in his pocket.

The simple question is this. What kind of phones will be running S60v3 in 2-5 years. Because V3 is not going anywhere. Nokia sells enough phones in emerging markets to ensure that. Remember this thread was about NON Cuttting edge.
 
Neither the new C5 or C3 seem to have WiFi--why not? The C5 with WiFi would seem to be a good replacement for my Nokia E51. Or perhaps Nokia want me to buy a C3 for what it offers in addition to an Apple iPod Touch to cover all the WiFi goodies.

Correction(?): just saw a video of Nokia World where they say the C3 does have WLAN. This could be my next phone!
 
Speak for yourself (and myself too).

But a lot of people are not going to browse the web with something even with a 4" screen on it. And it won't matter if its a 4.3 or 5" screen. Its too small for them.

Its the same people who lug a netbook or a Macbook with them where ever they go, the kind you see in Starbucks so often.

There is a huge market the smartphone nor the superphone will never reach. This is where the tablet kicks in.

As for carrying multiple devices, I see lots of people do that all the time, often with a BB and an iPod Touch, quite a popular combination. I don't mind and carry at least an Android phone and an iPod Touch all the time.

On top of that I have to say I see netbooks being used frequently for VOIP calls. This is where tablets can also make an impact.
 
Exactly. The people carrying multiple devices are going to replace their netbook/notebook with tablets. But not their smartphones. And there are plenty of people that browse on their 3.5" iPhone.
 
Couple of things...


5 years from now S^3 won't be cutting edge. I'm sure V3 will still probably be around for emerging markets, and the remaining non-touchscreen phones.



Second and to the earlier point. I always wear my phones in a holster no matter how big or small they are. I'm not a fan of keeping it in my pocket. Once I went holster I never went back. IMO it's much easier to access the phone. (especially with jeans) Plus the last phone I put in my pocket was an old Motorola and it looked like *** when I tried to sell it. I'm definitely a holster and screen protector user. Some may think that's babying it, I strongly disagree.


As for screen size, I think 3.5-4' is the sweet spot for cell phones. Surely somebody will try to make one larger, but I think people would start to get turned off if it looks too big...
 
Ummmm out of ALL my phones that I have ever owned I have always left them in my locker.

I go to the gym to workout and refuse to be interrupted. It's a pet peave of mine when phones go off in the gym. I actually got into a recent argument with another gym member because he was sitting on a machine taking on the phone and wouldn't leave.

IMO phones don't belong on the gym floor. Get in, do your thing, and get out...
 
You must have really long headphone cables to reach from you locker to the treadmill.

In case you hadn't noticed, the boom of smartphones over the last 3 years is because of the convergence of devices. If you don't want to be interrupted in the gym by a phone call, then set your phone to offline mode. (I often do this with mine.) But I still like to use my phone to listen to music while I workout. That way I dont have to carry a phone, an MP3 player, a camera, a gps, etc.

With that said, you can see some interesting things in Nokias latest releases. I know they are S40 phones, but the c3 and x3 touch and type phones are kinda cool. I wonder if S60 will get a hybrid touch device in the future. Also the c3 and x3 have wifi. I think there are only 1 or 2 other s40 phones that were released with wifi. So things do trickle down.
