The ECU - electronic control unit - is your cars computer. It receives information from sensors and sends information to other sensors, relays, actuators, etc.... to properly operate your vehicle under varying conditions.
A misfire could be caused by many things. -- A bad spark plug or wire, a vacuum leak, a valve problem, an injector, etc........
Your problem could be either mechanical or electronic.
