What does ripping mean? (army)?

this is what my husband said:
"Then when I get back I will have like 4 months until we start RIPING with the next unit"

(he is currently deployed)
what does this mean?
so this means it will be 4 months until his unit take over their stateside duties, NOT 4 months until they are preparing for their next deployment?
 
the other unit gets there and he comes home in a few weeks after he teaches them how to take over and do their job.... ripping comes from the initials of Relief In Place.
 
RIP(ing) Relief in Place. It's when you come in and replace the unit that was holding the ground before you. When the RIP is done (usually about 2 wks), you have TOA (transfer of authority). Therefore we often say RIP/TOA. Hope that helps.
