what does ps2 system data do?

i have a ps3 slim 120 gb i was really hoping to play ps2 games on my ps3 but damn sony discontinued it T_T any way i was hopin ps2 system data will let me play those ps2 games on ps3 ive heard allot of yes and a lot of no just tell me the truth can i play ps2 games on ps3 with ps2 system data!?!?!?!?!?!??! thank you
