Rather than wiring the ends of electronic components to each other, in point to point construction, the ends are soldered to fixed posts or terminal strips. Some of these posts or terminal strips are mounted to the printed circuit boards. Others are mounted to the metal chassis. Some of these terminal strips mounted to the chassis provide a ground connection while others are insulated from the ground.
Although point to point wiring is an old technique that started before circuit boards existed, it is still used even with surface mount components today.
