My poor little betta is very ill.
It started about four days ago.
I noticed he was graying around his face and his fins.
It got worse. Now where his fins seems to "attach" to his body he has two white dots. His stomach seems a little unusually bloated but not too extreme. At first I thought he had Dropsy, but it doesn't look like it after reading more about it. Yesterday he was still chasing his fish flakes around his tank (there is a current because of the filter) and eating, today he just floated up to the top and ate one or two flakes as they passed by him. He seems to be more vertical and his fins seem more clamped, and his movement is very sporadic. Also, his tail has torn. I'm not sure if he caught it on something or what.
He has been hiding in his treasure chest and rarely comes out. This morning after moving out of his chest he just laid at the bottom of his tank. I'm very worried that I'm going to lose my poor fish.
My tank is a 3 gallon tank with air-stone filter and small water heater.
The water temp. is sitting around 77 F.
The pH was around 7.5 when I last tested it.
I don't have an ammonia test kit, but I just changed him into this tank with fresh, conditioned water.
Before I bought this tank, he was in a 1/2 gallon tank with no filter and of course, no heater. I felt so bad because the water temperature wasn't regulated that I went out and bought a large tank.
Could this all be caused by stress?
I read up on stress disorders in fish, and the site I was at said to wrap the tank in a towel for a few days so that the fish feels safe and the vibrations around the tank can be somewhat absorbed so that can lower the stress. At first it seemed to help, he got his colour back, but that only lasted for a few hours. I bought melafix for his tail, because I don't want it getting infected. I'm hoping that someone can help me.
I'm moving back to residence tonight and leaving my fish with my mom until he gets better so that I can bring him up with me, or, the not-so-happy thought, he dies.
I'm very distraught over my poor fish, and have lost sleep worrying about him. I hope someone can tell me what's going on so I can help him quickly.
I have visited many sites including the following:
nippyfish.net
bettatalk.com
ultimatebettas.com
I feel like I keep getting the same information, and it sounds like it could be many things. I'm feeling exhausted from lack of sleep worrying about the poor guy, and from searching for answers and not finding anything conclusive. I just want to get my betta better.
I thought it was ich a few days ago, I went out and bought ich-guard but the white spots I described look like they are his scales that have just lost colour. they aren't tiny like ich particles that I have already thoroughly researched.
*sigh*
