What does "Make my Day" Law have to do with Dirty Harry's line?

"If someone breaks into your home you do not have a duty to retreat before using deadly force"

What does it have to do with "Make my day" that Harry utters when the robber holds the waitress hostage? And what exactly does "duty to retreat" mean? Thanks.
 
Duty to Retreat means that before you can legally take any action to defend yourself in your own home, you must first try to flee the premises. In states with this statute, it is illegal to defend yourself unless you have already tried to flee and have no other means of escape. Some states that still have this are Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Oregon. It is complete bull.

Luckily, most states have wised up and adopted the Castle Doctrine or Stand Your Ground Law that says you may use deadly force to protect yourself or other innocent persons from violent attack when in your own home.

The term comes from the movie Sudden Impact where Dirty Harry utters that line. The term comes about because in the movie Dirty Harry stands his ground with the suspects while he utters that line, basically warning the suspect that if he tries to do anything, he will be met with deadly force.
