What does it take to become a (PHP) programmer?

When you realize you enjoy technical design and engineering you don't start learning it by trying to read space shuttle blueprints. Same thing here. Start by getting a book at a library, then try some simple projects on your own. Find a few blogs to follow. www.dzone.com is a very good development blog directory, you just have to find the section you are interested in (in your case PHP) and subscribe to its feed. I think I've also seen some PHP video courses / interactive tutorials available online.
Good luck!

I'm just beginning to understand the immense possibilities of (web) programming. Therefore I set out to learn some popular languages like PHP, CSS, javascript. My aim is to put my own ideas into practice rather than hire programmers to do them for me(the programmers could steal my ideas and use them for their own good). The tutorials seem to be simple enough, but whenever I take a look at working scripts like Joomla, Webid, and Dolphin there's a lot I don't understand(This is especially the case with PHP).This makes me fear that I can never know enough programming to do things for myself. I need some advice.
