What does it mean when a mother tries to compete with their daughter?

Shes done many things and action to show shes trying to compete silly things like if a guy is looking my way she'll look to try to get their attention or if Im driving with her only on a few occasions she'll looks at the person and look at the wheel like to say Im the one driving so why you looking at her and various other things. Or am I imagining all this.
There's something in the past that she did I wont get into but what makes a mother behave like this?
