What does it mean to pre order?

I'm about to pre order Pokemon Heart Gold on Target.com but I'm not really sure what that means. I'll be paying for it as if I were just ordering it but I'm still confused. It says it will be released March 15th. Should I just wait??? Is pre oredering bad?
 
its just like reserving your copy. if you pre-order you pay for it now (sometimes for cheaper) and you have a garuntee that you have it the day it is released. i do this for things that i know will be hard to get.
