What does it mean for man to be made on the image of God?

And why when a mother gives birth to her first baby the baby looks just like her and has features of her or it can look a lot like the father.
 
We are made in the image of god because we have love, justice, sympathy, conscience, etc. Lower animals do not have these feelings. We don't look like God because God is a spirit and spirits have no flesh and blood. 1 Cor 15:50.
