What does Gross mean in economics?

The use of "Gross" to mean ugly is a fairly recent evolution of the word,it did not have that meaning when i was growing up.
A lot of words used by "young people" today have a different meaning than years ago.
I am 46, when I was a child "Gay" meant happy -not homosexual.
 
It sounds like 'not clean', ugly! Why is it used in economics? especially in energy.
For example Gross production of electricity... Why call it gross? In what sense?
 
It is the amount of money you earn before the dirty rotten government takes away their spending money (tax) what you are left with is called Net.
 
When you get a paycheck, Gross is your total pay before any deductions. Net is your pay after deductions, your take-home pay. In business, Gross is the total amount of your sales, Net is what
you made after all expenses, your profit.
 
In economics, gross means before deductions. This is why they call it gross.
It is how much money or any other thing they made.
ex/ , "earned two million dollars, gross". Alternatively, it can be used as a verb: "this movie grossed two million dollars on its opening weekend".
