What does Freeman Morgan know about astronomy/cosmology?

Nothing. He knows how to read a script.

As for old cosmos episodes, the only way to get people interested in science is to tell them about the frontiers as they are now. Showing them a TV show from 30 years ago can't accomplish that.

He's a recognizable celebrity with a great voice reading a script. He's a name to attract viewers and get higher ratings for the show.

Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" is certainly something to strive for, but when you set the bar that high, you can't be too critical when every subsequent science show fails to live up to it.
