What does "flashing" mean(xbox)?

People at school are talking about flashing their xbox, and I'm really curious as to what it means. And flashing an Xbox modchip, does it mean the same thing? Please don't give stupid answers like "put it in the sun and flash it" or "use a flash light" or anything of the sort. You know it or you don't. Thanks!
Also! Does 'flashing' only work on Xbox 360 or does it work on the regular Xbox too?
