what does flash error mean on my mp3 player?

hello I have a philips mp3 player i have always down loaded on my old laptop and charged it on this laptop i have just got a new laptop and charged the mp3 on this when i went to turn on the mp3 player it says ' Flash error please back up data and format the player '#

It will not let me turn on or off the mp3 player , anyone can help please i am lost with out it !!!
