What does Elitism mean to you when you discuss current issues?

A lot of people discuss elitism when they discuss current issues. How would you define it?

You don't have to go with a textbook definition. I'd just like to know what you think it is, and if it's good or bad.

In our current political atmosphere, I'd define it as people assuming they're educated and important enough to steal other people's money and spend it on other people, while they look down their noses at the working people they are stealing it from.

Stealing is bad.

People who don't have to deal with real world issues telling other people who to deal with things.

Like Al Gore. He has a huge house and uses about 50x the average energy the average American does.. but then goes around telling the rest of us to cut back on energy use.

In today's political climate, some think it means snobs. I refer to it as well rounded, highly skilled and progressive. For example, Tiger Woods is the an elite athlete and my physician is an elite doctor.

That arrogant Mr.Obama and his gang, they are the epitome of elitism.

Thanks for the two points and all the thumbs down you elitist wackos.

What is the matter YAHOO, you don't believe freedom of speech?

Half the pleasure in Yahoo Answers is seeing how many times I get blocked. Are you going to let me post this, I changed it to Mr. Obama.

To me elitism is the very wealthy that have influence on policy. People that have never had the struggle of day to day life like most Americans. Examples would be the Ed Kennedy, Jay Rockefeller, George Bush. They all came from very wealthy families and never had to worry about paying the bills like most people. Yet they create legislation that the people must live with while it will never affect their life at all. There are many families like this, some influence policy even though they never hold public office. David Rockefeller comes to mind. He has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and started the Trilateral Commission, they both have a large influence over policy making yet are not a part of the elected government. I think they are likely to influence public policy to benefit their businesses rather than benefit the average citizen. Most are pushing for a world order in which they can do business all over the globe and have more influence on government even though that would mean the end of US sovereignty.

In reference to government and current issues, it is used derogatorally to describe those who think that they are better than the unwashed masses and the rules do not apply to them. Many in government seem to fit this profile
