What does a thermostat on a Honda Accord do?

drivers ed project- its a 2006 Honda Accord
we have to know what it does, what happens if it breaks, and the cost to replace it/get it fixed
i looked on howstuffworks.com, honda.com, bbk.com, and more
im having so much trouble, and its due tonight!

The thermostat restricts the coolant flow thereby letting the car get to operating temperature faster, after that it regulates the coolant flow to keep the engine at the desired operating temperature.
If the thermostat fails your car may overheat. If you run without a thermostat the computer will always run the car in an enrichment warm up mode, meaning your gas mileage will be poor and your engine will produce less power.
Replacing the thermostat is relatively simple and inexpensive, though vehicles these days vary widely.
