In England, the Poet Laureate is expected to write poems for certain important occasions, such as the coronation of a new King or Queen, or a death in the Royal family. In the United States, there are no particular duties associated with the job. The Laureate simply serves as the public face of poetry in the nation, and promotes poetry in whatever way he or she sees fit.
