What does a nice car stereo system consist of?

My boyfriend and I haven't exchanged gifts yet because we've been out of town. I actually still have to buy his but we'll be exchanging next week. He just got a new car (used, but new to him) I'd like to get him a nice sound system for it but I'm not even sure exactly what that consists of. I know the terms I've heard like amp, subwoofer, etc. but how many of each do I need? And what are the best kinds? I don't think he needs a new CD player unit because he seems to like the one that came with the car, but what's the other stuff he needs? Thanks!
Captian: Do you lack reading comprehension skills? Did I not mention that I wanted to incorporate an AMP, a SUBWOOFER and possibly an interior HEAD UNIT into this endeaver. Maybe you shouldn't answer questions that are clearly above your capabilities, moron.
