What does a 'hold' on a checking account mean?

I deposited a check for $6,600 dollars. My bank said they would have to verify the check that I gave them and it could take up to 5 days. It's about 3 days later and I checked my account online. It looks like they put the 6600 in my account....then took it right back out.....it says 'unable to verify funds.' It now says I have a $6600 hold on my account.....what exactly does this mean. What happened to my $6600 dollars?
