What does 1x status mean on a Samsung Stunt cell phone?

Ok, might be a stupid question. This icon is on my cell phone don't know what it means. Save my sanity! lol

I have Samsung Caliber, and also have the "1x" status. I went into the icon glossary, but it doesn't say what it is. So, I went online and found out that it means you're on a digital signal, and can transmit text and pic messages. From what I read anyway. If you find something different, I will check back periodically.
