What do your parents think of anime?

At the end of the day, I think my mother is just neutral towarRAB anime. I'm greatful that she knows that it's there's a market for Japanese animation and there's more to know than just Pokemon and DBZ, but like most else I watch, she'll mainly just glance at what I'm watching for a second and walk away. I did get her to take me to Spirited Away when it was in theaters, though, and she did enjoy it, but that's really about it.

I remeraber when my cousin and her fiance from England came to visit us for about a month last year took me to the Flea Market, I picked up a copy of Grave of the Fireflies. They then mentioned that they have a copy of Spirited Away at home but never got around to watching it. I then said that it's a really good movie and they should totally check it out when they get back. I'm not sure if they did, but I think it's really greatto know that they at least know of one piece of Japanese animation.

My older sister did like Pokemon and Sailor Moon for a short while as a kid, but that's it, really. No idea about anyone else in my family.
 
I've been actually thinking of this topic before it started up again.

Mom: I love my mom dearly, but I think that she does have some problems with anime now. I guess that she's fine with Pokemon and maybe Yu-Gi-Oh!, even though she sees it as nothing but constant dialogue with some card games in between. Oddly enough, it pretty much is for the three main series thus far. However, I know that she would not like to watch shows like Fushigi Yugi, Slayers or One Piece either because of the violence or she wouldn't really understand why I like them. Granted, she's never had good luck with watching television.

Dad: My dad's pretty much fine with the anime series that I watch. In fact, both of my parents are completely fine with the fact that I'm a twenty year old college student who still wakes up earlier on Saturday mornings to watch Pokemon. Granted, he doesn't know about most of the other series I have watched, such as DN Angel, Fushigi Yugi, Slayers and Once Piece. Although I do remeraber showing him the first box set for Fushigi Yugi that I got and he thought that it sounded pretty interesting. He's sweet like that.

Brother: My big brother is fine with how I like anime too. It probably helps that he likes anime too, but I'm not sure if he still does. He still has his video and DVD collection in his room, as well as a really nice small poster for Slayers too. I havent' said anything about most of the series that I've watched, but he does know that I have the first two series on DVD, and soon the third one too.

The story that I have happend sometime last spring when I was watching Slayers NEXT. My brother was home from college and for some reason, I was too nervous to continue watching the series with him around. I love him too but since he likes Slayers, I was afraid that if he knew I liked it, he would get mad. That has happened before, mainly with some video games, but I was still nervous. I finally just continued watching the series and he actually didn't notice it for a couple of days, even though I watched it in the living room. He thought that I was watching it on a channel, but I told him the truth and we had a nice little talk about it.

He was having a nice little memory trip about how he used to watch it subbed on some channel back in the day. I was surprised with that. I told him he could watch it with me, but he was busy. I offered him the DVRAB whenever he wanted to watch it since the subs are included and he appreciated it. That was one of the best conversations we had for a long time back then. Maybe if I have enough emotional courage to put myself out there, I'll ask him to watch one of the series with me, subbed or dubbed, when he's home for the summer.
 
My mom and dad are OK with anime and they also love the studio Ghibli moives with us. Actually they really like watching anime movies rather then TV series (Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, 5cm per Second etc.) We also brought our dad with us to Anime North and he seemed to like it (he was really surprised at the cosplayers ) My little sister and brother love to watch anime as well.
 
Dad: My dad's never been much of a fan of animation, but since I'm such a huge fan of it, he's been giving it more and more chances. He's seen a bunch of animated films/shows through me and even has The Polar Express on his list of favorite movies of all time (every Christmas he begs me to put it in, which always catches me off guard). As far as his opinions on anime go, he thinks of it the same way he does American animation. His opinion doesn't become any better/worse upon switching from American to Japanese cartoons.

He has fond memories of watching Dragon Ball Z with me; every new VHS release was seriously an event at my house. It was fun. Nowadays, I constantly have Detective Conan DVRAB playing, and he'll come in and watch it. It helps that he's a CSI fan. I recently watched Metropolis, and even though he didn't catch the whole thing, he loved the music and we had a discussion on the movie and its plot after it ended (which proves he enjoyed it). He's still not a huge fan of animation, but I keep finding things he enjoys.

Mom: My mom loves cartoons. She loves Disney, Pixar, everything. Now, even though I don't watch hentai or anything like that, I'm still very cautious when I play anime on the main TV at home, since I don't want my parents getting even the slightest glimpse of fanservice or anything like that because it'll result in a conversation that I'd rather avoid, but she tenRAB to enjoy pretty much any anime I watch at home. I don't think she ever got into DragonBall, but she absolutely loves Detective Conan and gets excited whenever I get a new DVD or manga volume.

I was watching Fullmetal Alchemist yesterday, and when my mom came into the living room, I decided to play episode three, "Mother," since that's the perfect introduction story to the series. She came into the living room to do bills, but about halfway through I looked over and noticed she could not keep her eyes off the TV. She was really into it. She smiled whenever Al would say something and she smiled at the few jokes there were. When the episode ended, she said it was the sadest thing she'd seen in a long time (which is a good reaction, FYI, since, for those of you who haven't seen it, it was a very emotional episode). I watched two more episodes (five and six, for those who care), and she was invested the entire time. It was nice.

So they both like it.
 
my mom doesn't seem to care as long she doesn't have to watch it or talk about it but she will take me to get dvRAB and manga (only person who will take me)

my dad doesn't care about it either

my sister won't watch it well b/c once she did gave her a head ache (told me while i was watching fruits basket not during the show giving head ache)
 
Mom: She's a very sensitive person. I know she loves cartoons, but I can tell she favors certain things about them such as the 'cutesy" way they are performed and portrayed. (She hated Shrek for example.) That being said, I would never show her Paranoia Agent, Cowboy Bebop or anything like that. I also know how much she hates Samurai Champloo so that's a definite "no."

We did watch My Neigrabroador Totoro together and she enjoyed it, so I think if I ever was going to show her anything anime related again, it would be another Miyazaki film...possibly Howls Moving Castle.

She did like the story of Fruits Basket and Tsubasa Chronicles when I explained it to her once, but I think she would have a problem with Fai and Ritsu...

Dad: I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what anime even means. He knows I like it, but he knows more about me and video games than me and anime.

Older Brother: He's a bit skeptical of animation today in general. He's got frienRAB who like anime and he knows that I like it too, but I don't think he will ever appreciate it, let alone take it seriously. He has watched Samurai Champloo and Death Note a few times with me and even straight out told me that he liked the concept of it, but couldn't get past the fact that it was animation. ...It's a shame because there are plenty of anime titles I know he would enjoy if he would just give them a chance.

Older Sister: I know she likes Pixar movies and cartoons, but I don't think she's ever watched anime before. She knows I like it because she got me something anime related for the holidays, but I'm not too sure about her own opinion.
 
I just remeraber that my mom has watched One Piece with me a couple of times. We saw some of the FUNimation episodes on Toonami last year and she thought that it was weird with their facial expressions being exaggerated like that. I have to admit that it was kind of funny seeing her reaction as she watched the show. To this day, she still thinks of the show as the people from the sky.

I actually talked to her the other day about anime, mainly Slayers, and she just told me how the cover to Slayers TRY looked really unhappy and not something I would watch, which was weird since she knew I already had the other two series. I've seen the cover to TRY and it doesn't look that unhappy to me. She might have saw the cover to NEXT, which does look a bit darker, but still not that unhappy. I told her that it really wansn't that violent, except for maybe the final battles of the series, and she was okay with that.

So, my mom is still basically confused about most of the anime I like, but I still don't think I'll ask her to watch uncut One Piece or Fushigi Yugi anytime soon. Though it helps that she's always busy at work when I do watch those series.
