What do you think the most overrated animated movie is?

I dunno about you, but pretty much everybody I met has either never seen the movie or they love the omgcuteepenguins without much comment on the plot as I noted in my post.



Pixar fanbrats' close-mindedness at work. Don't get me wrong, I love Pixar's movies too and I think they deserve the praise, but their fanatics are some kind of unholy combination of obnoxiously snobby and really irritating. Apparently they like to proclaim open-mindedness but then unfairly rate other films and others opinions just because they didn't give the Pixar movie a perfect score and proceed to flame them.

Lol, OK guys. That totally wants me to take you seriously. /sarcasm



Oh, sorry. I must've oversimplified the meaning and misinterpreted. Most dictionaries do define “overrated” as that. And people often misinterpret overrated as, well, “Popular thing you don't like” and people tend to make that the large portion of the complaint.



I was going by the Internet definition of overrated, since these threads tend to go that path, and I said how I felt about Happy Feet with the Internet definition in mind. :P

What do you agree exactly with?
 
The way I see it, I may enjoy pixar but they take too much credit for everything while leaving someone else's work not get the attention it deserves.
 
Oh, I was saying that if your argument was more specifically for making arguments to support one's evaluation of a film's merits rather than just saying, "People like this and I don't. People are wrong" than I wholeheartedly agree with it. It's just the wording was a little murky so I was putting forth some clarification more for my benefit than that of anyone else.

It seems like we're back where we started though when it comes to that sorta thing though. As Shrek isn't overrated, it's more of a popular thing that certain people don't happen to like much.

After pulling down the Oscar and unarguably changing the entire landscape of future animated projects, both for better and for worse, the original film has amassed a decade's worth of retroactive backlash after much praise was heaped upon it for being one of the savior's of the industry that dared to take on the top dog. It also inspired one of the most poorly-constructed run-on sentences in this entire thread. Possibly the worst effect it's had yet.

The backlash and familiarity-bred contempt spread to the entire franchise. I think dislike and outright hatred for the films runs deep enough in the animation enthusiast community to actually rate the films as underrated at best and rated where they should be at worst.

The praise is gone and now only the popularity remains. And recent receipts for both box office and home viewing sales and rentals show that even the popularity is quickly dissipating.

As for How To Train Your Dragon, I believe whoever posted that one is right in their estimation that it is an overrated movie. It's one of my favorite films of last year. But in my opinion some of the characters' motivations, and heck even some of the characters, were paper thin. The fantastic praise for the movie seems to spring more from the opinion that for the first time in what seemed like forever, someone other than the Golden Child known as Pixar produced a film with genuine heart and emotion, little to no snark or just unforgivably anachronistic jokes or pop-culture nods and a somewhat gutsy ending And the fact that it also inspired even more terribly-constructed run-on sentences than most of its actual merits. Of which it has plenty, just not enough to be called "BEST MOVIE EVAR!"

It does have one spectacular score though. Though, I don't know about you guys, but I don't really like the mixing or levels on the CD soundtrack very much. They seemed to have fixed that on the FYC site for the score that DWA has set up. The tracks don't seem to have the same problem with noise as they do on the CD. It's not going to win however. Zimmer or Reznor & Ross have that one in the bag.
 
You see, I'm the reverse. I personally love all of the Renaissance films, but I think they're all overrated to an extent, but I'll be willing to defend Lion King at the drop of a hat.

Like I said, I find that the Renaissance films are starting to overshadow the movies made in Walt's own lifetime, and that doesn't bode well with me at all.

The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King are all very good movies, with excellent songs, characters that have appeal to millions for good reasons, effective stories, and some solid animation and artwork throughout.

I could also name the bad from these movies all day. Horrible animation to be found in a lot of sequences (Lion King's exempt from that, since I still can't think of any particular scene with shoddy work done in it), a song or two I'd cut out, inconsistencies in stories, and some characters I just plain don't like.

Granted, I've seen these movies thousands of times. I wore out all of their video tapes, and I try to watch these movies as many times as I can to memorize them because I think that will help me if and when I get a job in the industry. I can say the same for most of Walt's classics. While I'm a little tired of Disney's princess films in general, I find that the movies made in Walt's lifetime are a little more ambitious and stronger than I remembered them being as a child.

These movies tend to be forgotten by today's standards, since when i talk to most people about Disney's classics, they usually refer to the movies made in the 90's than the originals. That's understandable, since the people I talk to were alive when a lot of these were first released, or Disney was still heavily promoting them. And while these movies still hold specials places in their hearts today, my friends tend to forget about Walt's films, even if they had their videos and saw them multiple times.

I seem to be the exception at least among my friends, but even today on various sites that I go to, I notice that movies like Beauty and the Beast tend to overshadow other films like Bambi or Peter Pan, and as someone who has constantly come back to all of these movies, that disappoints me a little.

I mean, I still love the four bigs ones of the Renaissance, but they do overshadow just about everything else in Disney's library. That's why I'd consider them overrated more than any other reason.

Also, I'm not touching the Pixar argument right now.
 
How to Train Your Dragon was taken pretty seriously. Ditto Prince of Egypt. While a very silly movie, it did seem like they were serious about the satirical aspects of the first Shrek (the sequels, on the other hand...).
 
I'm gonna have to second Up. It was an enjoyable movie and I certantly don't regret seeing it in theaters (in 3-D, no less). However, I think Wall-e was a bit more deserving of an oscar nomination.

What bothered me about Up is that the story was too predictable. Barring the death of Carl's wife, it wasn't hard to guess how the movie would play out. Charles Muntz had to be the villian. Why else would he be introduced in the first place?. Of course, Carl was gonna decide to save Russel and everything would be alright. How else could it end? It is true that the film was meant to be a character piece and less about the adventure than Carl. I just wouldn't have minded if it had some more inventive twists.

Clearly there was care put into this film and it deseveres praise for its humor and heart. It's simply that Pixar has made better films in the past.
 
Ugh, and I suppose those Pixar "fanbrats" also just about despise 2D animation or anything made before the 1990s that wasn't by Pixar. That really stinks.
 
Nah, it's really that they unfairly rate non-Pixar CG films and flame people who don't give their precious movies perfect scores and like non-Pixar movies. *gasp!* I haven't seen a large backlash about traditionally animated films to be honest.
 
Happy Feet and Finding Nemo.

Happy Feet was just boring, hardly a great film, and the protagonist isn't that great, IMO.

Finding Nemo I found to be one of Pixars worst films, bar Cars. Up, Wall-E, Toy Story, they are all better.
