it's not finished and
the main plot of the story is going forward starting w/ 7th grade as the main characters opinion on what a best friend is changes. at first the story starts as if from a 2nd graders perspective but as the main character gets older the voice of the story changes and it becomes for sophisticated writing
Part 1: Elise
“And bringing home Teddy this weekend, and writing in his journal is, Elise Petracca!” said my teacher Mrs. Moran. Elise is so lucky! I haven’t gotten to take home Teddy yet, but it’s still only the first month of school. I want to take him home the MOST of all the other 2nd graders in Mrs. Moran’s class. I’ll get to see Teddy though because me and Elise are having our first ever play-date at her house tomorrow, she’s nice and she’s my best friend.
Elise’s mom picks her and her brother, Nick, up from school every day. I take the bus even though I could walk to school. Before we leave the classroom, Elise says to me, “Bring Samantha tomorrow so we can play dolls.” I say okay then walk to the cafeteria to wait for my bus that is always late.
Me and Kelsey share a room. Kelsey is in kindergarten and loves playing with MY Samantha. She is already home from school when I get home so I see her on her bed playing with Samantha. She sees me and throws Samantha on my bed pretending she wasn’t playing with her. Why should I even argue with her now, I’m having a play-date tomorrow so I’m happy.
In the morning I dress Samantha up pretty. She is wearing her pink and white striped dress with the white frilly pinafore which I got for my birthday with Samantha. Samantha is my doll best friend.
“Guess what Samantha,” I said.
“What?” Samantha said.
“We’re going to Elise’s house in a few minutes so you have to behave yourself.”
“Okay.”
“We’re gunna play with Kit too!” Samantha was excited and so was I.
We played at Elise’s house all day and it was time to go home. I say good-bye to my best friend and go home.
“I guess what!” I boasted, coming in to class a month later. “I got a squishy calculator!” Everyone crowded around me looking at the brand new calculator from Staples. Elise came over and said,
“Look at this!” She then typed in ‘993’ and turned the calculator upside-down.
“It spells EGG,” I exclaimed. My best friend smiled the typed in ‘318830’ then turned the calculator upside-down again.
“It spells Debbie, as in my older sister’s name!” Elise yelled. Mrs. Moran told us to quiet down and class began by discussing our projects where we would dress up as a historic person and do a presentation, I was doing Mary Cassatt.
Its 3:28, FINALLY! Me and Elise smiled and got up to get our backpacks. Debbie was driving me and my best friend back to my house. We were going to ride bikes. It was already October so it was getting cold, but not cold enough to stop us!
By the end of November my family was going up to Windham, NY every weekend to ski. Me and Elise could no longer have play-dates on the weekends, but had them in plethora during the weekdays.
Spring came and on June 15, the day before the last day of school, my bus was VERY late. This was annoying because Elise was coming home with me on the bus! While we were waiting we were talking about what we were going to be when we grew up. Me and my best friend were going to go to the Olympics for gymnastics in high school, we were taking gymnastics together, then we were going to go to Holy Cross college then move in to an apartment in New York city together.
While still waiting for the bus, my half cousin, Meghan Rose, came over and challenged me to a drawing contest. I ALWAYS won drawing contests except for mermaids because the tails were too hard. Feeling fully confident I let her choose the category.
“Mermaids,” she said with a smirk. We drew for two whole minutes and then time was up. I had spent so much time on the tail it was perfect. The only problem was I forgot about the upper part of the body. I quickly drew it real fast and waited for the two fourth graders, Isabel and Cara, to grade them.
“Kristen’s tail is perfect!” exclaimed Cara.
“But the body she drew is FAT,” continued Cara’s twin. Isabel was right, it was so fat it was gross. Meghan Rose won the contest and the bus came to bring me and Elise home.
“I thought yours was better Diddin,” said Elise. Kendall, my one and a half year old sister calls me Diddin, every since she started calling me that, so has Elise.
The school year ended and me and Elise spent the summer together, going to Jones Beach, playing dolls, bike riding and having lemonade stands. The first two weeks in August my family went to Hilton Head Island, and when we got back my teacher assignment was sitting in the mailbox just begging to be opened. The car barely skidded to a stop before I jumped out like a madwoman and tore to the mailbox, ripping open my letter. Mrs. Bennett.
“MOMMY!” I screamed, “Can I use your cell phone?” Without waiting for an answer I flipped the phone I was hiding
I did not have to even look at the numbers I was typing to know what I was dialing, I feat for a third grader is must say. Nick answered the phone.
“Hello?” He asked.
“It’s Kristen, is Elise there?”
“Hi it’s Elise, who’s your teacher?” A high pitched voice replied.
“I have Mrs. Bennett,” I exclaimed.
“Me too!” Yelled my best friend.
The first week of school went by and Elise and I became closer than ever, if that’s possible. It was Tuesday September 11, 2001. We were doing our morning journals when Lia Homayuni, whose twin had left last year to go to private school and had become my good friend, pointed out the window facing towards New York City.
“Look at all that smoke! Why does it look so weird Mrs. Bennett?” asked Lia. Mrs. Bennett replied that there was probably a fire and that we should continue our work. Half an hour the classroom phone rang. Mrs. Bennett picked it up then told Taylor Liberta to pack her backpack that her mom was at the office coming to pick her up.
Five minutes after that Alexander was sent home with his mom. It was when the phone rang a third time that people became confused, this time me and Elise had to go downstairs. Elise and I chattered down the hallway as if we were only going home to have a play date. When we reached the office I found out that it was Christine and not Kristen that had been called down. Just as I turned to go back to my classroom, my Aunt Nancy walked in the door saying that she was taking me, my cousin Connor and my first grade sister Kelsey home.
The rest of the fall and winter went by and me and Elise decided we were old enough to have a sleepover. It took a lot of time, but we finally convinced our moms to let us sleepover at Elise’s house. Of course Elise and I both knew that although it was a “sleepover” we weren’t going to actually sleep.
That May day of our first sleepover was the day that Elise’s brother, Nick had gotten The Sims.
Elise and I created a family called the “Petroche” family with our families combined. When it was time to “go to bed,” Elise and I stayed up playing the her Kit and my new doll, Felicity.
School was over and it was the first day of summer school. Me and Elise had signed up for all the same classes; doll making, cooking, theatre, and pottery. The second week of summer school I came in to theatre holding a picture of a white house. I sadly told everyone that we had bought a house and that we would be moving to Darien Connecticut. Thankfully we had not sold our house yet so the moving time was yet to be decided.

It was the week before the Halloween of fourth grade. Elise and I were both it Mr. S’s class and there was still no sign that we’d be moving any time soon. Both my best friend and I were going to be pajama girls for Halloween and trick-or-treat together with our families.

It was the last weekend for skiing at Windham that Elise and her mom came up to ski with us.
It wasn’t very cold so Elise and I skied all day without stopping. We both knew that the odds of my coming back to Munsey Park Elementary School the next year were very slim.
****
We were right. My parents sold our house on Revere Road that spring and by August we had moved in to Darien. On the last day of summer school that year before fifth grade Elise brought me in a red rose.
“I stole it from my sister’s desk, isn’t it pretty?” I nodded. It wasn’t a real red rose, just a pen, but she was right, it was pretty. Darien was only 45 minutes from Manhasset, we would see each other often, especially since my cousins and grandparents lived in Manhasset.
I was only ten years old when Elise gave me the red rose pen, but I was old enough to understand the symbolic meaning. A red rose is like a best friend.
Part 2: Meg and Claire
My mom told me the conversation went like this. It was the kindergarten orientation two weeks before school started. Caroline, my sister, was going to be in
kindergarten. Me in fifth grade, and Kelsey in third grade, all at Royle Elementary School in Darien Connecticut.
“My name is Kathleen DelCol and I am head of the PTO. I have three sons and one daughter, in fifth grade,” if after this presentation you’d like to ask me some questions I’ll be by the door. Naturally my mother went to seek out Mrs. DelCol after the presentation.
“My name is Lisa Roche, I noticed you said you had a fifth grade daughter. I have one too and she’s going to be new this year,” explained my mom.
“Yes, Meg is in fifth grade,” replied Mrs. DelCol.
“Maybe the two of them could do something before school starts so that Kristen knows somebody,” continued my mom. Needless to say that Friday I was in the car on my way over to Meg’s house for the first time.
“Hi, I’m Meg,” said an energetic brunette with short hair and bangs, “Claire wanted to come over to so she’ll be here any second.”
Just then the doorbell rang and Claire, also a brunette, with long curly hair walked in and gave Meg a hug.
