What do you think of this idea to end the debate of DADT?

I'm not in the Military so my opinion on whether gays should be able to serve openly is irrelevant. However, I was thinking about the issue and I think a solution to debate would be to logically compromise.

From my understanding the Military has gathered information saying that most non-combat oriented soldiers wouldn't mind having gays serve openly. And most combat soldiers would mind.

So I think a possible solution is to allow gays to serve openly in non-combat roles. And forbid them from serving openly in combat roles. Kind of like how women are not allowed to serve in direct combat (not that I'm comparing gays to women. This just seems like the closest metaphor I can think of).

Thoughts?
All of you are commenting saying the debate is over. It's not. The law doesn't go in effect for a while, so the Military can have more time to decide on the issue and then ultimately decide what to do.
Alright, maybe I shouldn't have said debate. Maybe I should have said alternative solution or something like that.
