The military is not a democracy. It is a totalitarian world in and of itself. They have the UCMJ, the uniform code of military justice which for the most part, completely by-passes state and federal laws. What they say, then you must do.
Look at it this way. the guys on D-Day were not permitted the privilege of having an encounter group to see if they wanted to run into enemy bullets. The door on the landing crafts were being hit by bullets, you were the guy right at the front, you know when the door drops that the bullets will riddle you. but, you are not afforded the rights of the Constitution which protects you from choosing if you want to be killed or not. The military defends the Constitution, but the guys in it do not have constitutional rights.
You are told to jump. Your only question is "how high".
