What do you think of Cartoon Brew????

And Cartoon Brew has just lost me as a reader, forever.

No, not for an article I don't agree with, but for putting a very, very NSFW image up on the main page. Not in a link. Not after a jump. No, right there as you're scrolling down the main page.
 
From what I can tell, Amidi's a John K. disciple, and a lot of his opinions seem to parrot his 90% of the time.

Unfortunately, I think John K.'s a bit of a troll and an egomaniac.
 
It's such a mixed bag. It has good news articles I can't seem to find anywhere else, but I 100% agree that the comments and editorial type posts are better left ignored.

And it has all the usual stuff from any fandom - the retrophiles that hate everything made in the last 10 years, the fanboys who hate anyone that isn't John K., etc. I thought for once they'd be happy with The Ballad of Nessie,, but no. That's just a ripoff by the faceless corporate greed of the New Disney Empire co-opting the fresh styles of the past to neutralize the opposition or something.

And there's the rule that new shows can be bad due to their art regardless of originality or plot (Regular Show), but they can be bad due to their plot regardless of the art (the new Looney Toons). But never vise-versa.
 
You know what really ticked me off about that? About a week or so later, they were praising "Happiness is a warm blanket Charlie Brown"! I guess it's OK to "fetishize the past" if a friend of Amids is working on it. :shrug:
 
I like CartoonBrew as a holder for college animation shorts or some minor updates that I would have never seen from rabroad (Like, while I found out InvaderCon was a thing from this site, I didn't know about the script readings until CartoonBrew, which I'm happy i saw), but I don't care for the articles themselves.

The main reason being I prefer discussion-of-the-story rather than just reading the story, and the discussion on CB is awful. It also helps that TZ mains in a forum rather than comment section. It makes things more active and organized, when someone posts a response to my opinion on something, I can go back and reply to that. With a "Submit your comment!" format, I might as well try go hold a discussion on a YouTube page.

And yeah, the whole "ANIMATION MUST BE WACKY DOWN WITH VARIETY" thing bugs me, too. I love Dan Vs., and I just know the crowd there would hate it for all the wrong reasons. Makes me glad there are places like TVTropes and rabroad to discuss such shows to get away from people like that.
 
Except, Amid doesn't have the drawing talent. John K is very open when it comes to his opinions (so is Amid) He doesn't like what he doesn't like. But he has the right to. He knows how cartoons work, he can analyze on a deep level about them.
 
Ehh, it's okay. The guy has a lot of negative reviews and I keep seeing that annoying Happy Tree Friends banner (no, Cartoon Brew, I do not need to get addicted to gory horror again! I finally got over that...)
 
Last time i read, John K was pre-moderating his own blog making sure only the right opinionated comments get through.

I don't see any other explanation why that one time i read his blog all the comments were supporting him bar none in his thrashing of Tangled among other things (reading that sent shivers down my spine, because one John K is quite enough by himself but apparently he grew up a fanbase of like-minded people by now).

By the way, Amid does the same. Out of three comments i made on cartoonbrew (back when i was still reading it), two didn't got through because i was pointing out his mistakes about russian animation (an area which i believe i have more experience in, having grown up on it and all).

Wait, that was serious? . . . I mean, he's seen his own work, right?
 
John K has become nothing but a parody of himself. He recently made a post stating that you can tell quality character design by the fact they could make good blow up toys. I'M NOT MAKING THIS UP. As much as I hate CB, at least they don't trash EVERYTHING.....sometimes....if their friends work on them.....
 
Uhmm, I'm pretty sure he was joking, trust me, that sounds like his type of strange humor. And he has a point, those characters aren't very well designed, atleast I think.

As for my own opinion of CB? It's a great place for independent animation and historical animation facts and stories. Not much else.
 
As ironic as it sounds i found that cartoons channel on 4chan is a better place for both these purposes and it's much more calmer place to hang around :evil:

Yeah, I think that basically sums up how I feel about it. It's good for info and news on the indie scene, but really not much else. Especially since anything besides indie films basically just gets a cut & paste "critique" about how the old days/indie films are so much better.
 
It's good for news sometimes. I don't really go there that often but when they find/have something I find interesting it's very, very good. Such as Disney hating on Bugs Bunny and this huge chart featuring every Hannah-Barbara character ever (not theirs but I found out about it through them). So yeah, they're cool.
 
Cartoonbrew may be a good site to go to for news about animation, but heck most of the people who are rather negative about it just bring the flamewars up.
 
I agree with most of the people here: great for news and student films and the like, but the personalities involved can be... a tad off-putting.
