What do you think most authors' opinions are on fan fiction that is based on their work?

I think I read somewhere that JK Rowling has nothing against it at all, but then there are authors like Anne Rice who prefer people didn't do it. I know I'd be flattered if one were to write any kind of fan fiction about something I'd written.

What do you think?
