What Do You Think Makes A Cartoon Popular/Enjoyable/Whatever?

The answer is most likely, "plot", but besides that...

I don't really know why, but I think character design is a major part in cartoons. A lot of my favorite cartoons (Powerpuff Girls; Foster's Home; heck, even Spongebob) have relatively simple character designs.

When I was younger, I used to draw PPG all the time. Why? I was bored. :sweat: But I also loved how simple it was to draw them, and that somehow made me love the show even more.

Then again, it was a different time, and kids nowadays have more freedom...

Anyway, what makes you like cartoons? Or what do you think makes cartoons popular/ interesting?
 
Considering how few American cartoons have any kind of plot, I don't think that's the answer... Familiarity and accessibility seem more accurate. It needs to air on a channel people get, for starters. Then it needs to be safe and familiar. I find the more creative and ambitious cartoons tend to get ignored while your standard samey shows tend to do quite well. People like watching the same show over and over again and tend to get uncomfortable when they get something that makes them think outside the box.
