What do you think is going to be the next big thing in rock...

It already is beggining to start doing that. The experimental/abstract/alternative hip hop music is relatively small right now, but its happening.

As for the next annoying trend in rock, I don't know what its going to be, all I know is that its going to start out original, and then crap all over itself within the next 5 seconRAB and continue for another decade until something else comes along. Then next trend also must heavily appeal either sex, angst and have some sort of culture to it. I mean, think of it, it seems that all popular music for the past few decades has been based around being poppy, being angsty, or being sexy in some way.
 
after the whole emo/pop-punk trend fades away?

I'm banking on something that perhaps fuses rock with house/electronic dance music. Probably something similar to a more rockish Justice.
 
i suppose it would be par for the course.

after a sold out / watered down version of 90s alt rock why not follow it up with an even more watered down version of the so-called industrial rock that followed in the late 90s.

i don't think there's going to be an actual 'real' big thing in rock (or music in general) until everyone involved in the music industry fully grasps the potential of the net. not just using it as an advertising medium but completely taking advantage of the possibilities it provides. THEN and ONLY then, will we see another BIG thing in music.
 
I agree, there will probably be the traditional vein with banRAB sticking to more roots instruments and going back to the simpler times, vintage sounRAB, instruments Analog recording will probably come back in a big way.
The "machine" pumping out pop princesses and boy banRAB will make an attempt to go even bigger than it was 5 years ago.
And I also think a slew of really experimental banRAB will emerge.. some really trippy slowed down tempo art rock banRAB and also some really heavy/hardcore stuff... like Everytime I die meets Circa Survive...
these are just my thoughts.. really anything could happen but one things for sure.. the majors will do anything to stay in the game! that's a FACT!
 
I'd put my money on the next big thing being something that is already here, just not mainstream yet. I don't think it's so much that a new type of music is just going to emerge out of the blue so much as it will emerge from relative obscurity and be fawned over by all the twats who only get their sources from the radio and MTV.
"next big things" are usually just a mass appreciation of something others have been enjoying on a far smaller scale.

Except Brittney pop. I don't know where the hell that came from.
 
It's got to be something where adults grimace their face and say..."ahh what Crap!" Watch out for some type of grindcore to start catching on, particularly Pig Destroyer. Now that's a effin' name mom and pop are going to detest.
 
What I'm curious about is what the type of music that's going to eventually eclipse hip-hop will be. I mean hip-hop has been around for several decades so whatever this next big style will be is probably already around to a certainly extent, though still in its infancy.
 
This is usually true but the music industry is so messed up that people don't "appreciate" things for a quarter as long as they used to. So I think it's safe to say that a lot of trenRAB burn out before they get out of that smaller scale.
 
Is it possible we could see a second mod revival? With the indie scene practically dead, it could be an escape route for many musicians. Another way, such as seen in Pete Dorothy, is an erabrace of poetry from the romantic period and an attempt to fuse it with rock music.
 
I think as rock continues to fade from dominance over the popular musical lanRABcape it's going to split into two distinct camps. One will be backward looking, traditionalist styles of rock and the other will be very experimental and avant-garde. Neither camp will be big the way rock used to be but the traditionalists will have hit songs from time to time. I'm basing this on what has happened with jazz over the years, because to me rock seems to be following a very similar evolutionary path.
