What do you think has caused mankind to fight / argue so much regarding religion?

It seems that religion has caused great rifts between people for thousands of years. Why do you do think that we've resorted to bloodshed so much over it?

Because none of them make sense. Since reason and logic are missing, the only way to be sure yours is the right one is to force it on everybody else. Thereby attaining strength in numbers (might is right) and wealth. (Have you seen how the pope lives?)
 
It is very obvious to me. Everyone believes they belong to the one and only religion. They are taught that their relgion is the one and only, and that they need to either save those who do not agree, or find ways in which to push them by demonizing them into submission. It has become similar to a large batch of cult followers.
