Do you think they will combine their efforts in Nascar also?
Got this info from CNN last evening and from what was reported it is going to happen one way or the other.

I just heard that Ford and Chrysler were considering a merger. I really don't know what's gonna happen. Just one more thing to blame on the recession1

I think it's a screwy deal. Chrysler was already bailed out by the government once in history several years back in the 80's because they stuck with making the larger over-sized cars instead of making smaller more economical fuel efficient cars. Now it sounds like Chrysler is seeking someone else's help to bail them out again.

What Chrysler needs to do is focus on new hybrid and/or alternate fuel cars like electric, hydrogen, or hydrogen electric cars. That would require a large transition. It sounds like they want to use the government (our tax money) to help make that transition and to help pay for laid off workers.

I like Chrysler cars and was eying a new Charger as I passed by the dealer last night. I'd hate to see Chrysler fall into the hands of Nissan or another foreign automaker but that's still possible. With the price of gas everything in our country has gone south (if you know what I mean). There is only one way around that and that is alternate fuels. Hydrogen seems to be the best alternative. It's eco-friendly also.

What needs to happen is for U.S. automakers to concentrate on developing hydrogen powered cars vigorously and rid the U. S. of dependency on foreign oils. As long as OPEC knows we need oil ... they are going to stick it to us. Of course they have already practically brought the whole world to their knees now so they've had to back it out and let everyone recover some with lower oil prices.

The GM and Dodge merger will probably fall through if the government doesn't provide them with a government loan. It doesn't even make sense to merge unless they were to concentrate on producing cars that run off of other sources of energy.

Just my opinion.

Merging GM and Chrysler is a bad deal for everybody involved in the automotive business and NASCAR.

They compete in basically every vehicle segment and have the same strengths (trucks, SUVs, large RWD cars, and V8 engines) and weaknesses (cars). GM would have to shell out billions buying out duplicate employees, plants, dealers, and brands. The only benefit to GM would be minivans and Jeep.

It wouldn't be any better in NASCAR. Once again GM would cancel one (Dodge) since it doesn't make sense to split the money between 2 brands and compete against yourself. That's why GM dropped Pontiac, Buick, and Olds from NASCAR.

Daimler screwed Chrysler over big. When they "merged" Daimler was bleeding money and Chrysler was very profitable. They took Chrysler's money to rebuild Daimler while leaving nothing for Chrysler to continue their future development.

i think its great you have to look at it years from now, they will have a great line up and then they can sell off

products when they need money

The merger won't help anyone in the long run. It won't make sense to run two cars from the same company in Nascar. Dodge may be on its deathbed as far as being a nameplate. Next thing you know Pepsi and Coke will merge. Dodge hasn't exactly had a great year in Nascar anyway. The way things are headed, there will only be 1 car company left in America when Ford and GM finally merge together in a few years.

Depending on when the merger takes place (it's sounding like it is inevitible) I think Dodge might still support their current teams for the 2009 season. After that I think it might be up to them to go with GM or some could possibly even switch to Ford. It does not sound like Brian and Mike want to let Toyota buy out the Dodge teams at this point.

Big question I see is why would a company loosing billions a quarter take over a company also loosing billions and sells almost the same product. To make it happen GM has give up its stake in GMAC which usually is a money maker and one few assets GM has that does make money. And hrysler sells so few cars anymore it's not a treat to GM. Only good think is other company semi interested in Chrysler is Nissan Renault group and I 'm not for that
