What do you think about the music industry's focus of commercialism over art?

I'm researching for a Media Studies assignment and want to know what people think.
Are artists now days simply selling out to make profits?
Is true art no longer valued in terms of music?
Are the record labels only hiring people they know will sell?
Should bands try and be independent from labels to show that they care more about art than profits?
Also does anyone know any good articles/websites relating to this topic?

it used to suck but now that they are using super computers as spin doctors, the formulas for success seem to be working better

but i miss the old days when a director had to take a chance, hit or miss .. cuz some of the hits were very good, sayeth sgt. pepper
