The American government wants to raise the gas tax by 50%. The reason for this is because the American Public is hurting financially and not traveling as much ergo not purchasing as much gas. The coffers of the government are getting smaller so cannot spend as much money on infrastructure. HMMM don't you think that if people are traveling less #1 the roads are not going to have the ware and tare like they usually would have? Also...were we not told for the sake of our environment to cut back and reduce our carbon foot print? People need to write financecommission.dot.gov and let them know you do not approve of this gas tax hike. We have got to start speaking up for ourselves and not let the government walk all over us.
This has nothing to do with dems or repubs. Look up the commision and see who is on the commision...this has to do with our government wanting to take our hard earned $ that we do not have extra of and putting it in the governments pocket
The point is...the less fuel we use the higher they want to tax us. Please take a stand and write the commission and let them know you are not for it.
Yes we will have a green "utopia" because we will be so broke that we all will have to grow our own food to survive if this keeps up.
Eddyward , that is just "WRONG"!!
We need to start speaking up and making our voices heard. I for one am getting on my soap box and letting them all know what I think...I just wish you all would.
If gas costs less don't you think people would be traveling more?
Kindatired: I agree with your avatar name...I am kindatired of all the dem and repub bashing. This is what is hurting our country. Wake up and just stand up for your self with out looking at the parties. This is something that will affect us all. They are not saying they are taxing just Dems. They are taxing all of us. Put down your Dem stick and stop beating a dead horse.
Kindatired: so OK, tax us to death..I cannot see where all your anger is coming from, all I am asking is for the American people to stand up for what is right and for what is wrong. Did I say I was a Dem or Repub? NO...so in this instance I am asking for bipartisan input. This is not a question as to which party is better this is a question stateing an unfair tax imposed on the middle class. So yes please put your stick down for a few min. take a deep breath and really consider what a Gas Tax hike will do to your family and friends.

The GOP does not believe in tax and spend. They just believe in spend! This is a violation of the core principles of the GOP. I don't kno where they went wrong.

I did look at the makeup of the Transportation commission that is proposing this tax increase. It's chaired by Bush transportation secretary Mary Peters. This is a bush tax increase.

If it was being proposed by a dem, everyone would be blasting the dems. But, since it's being proposed by a bush repub, we're supposed to say it has nothing to do with being a dem or a repub?
That's quite a double standard.

There should be a tax on gas but all of the money raised should go towards reducing payroll taxes. This would encourage job growth while reducing our oil dependence and the amount of money we send to countries like Saudi Arabia.

That won't be the end of it. They are also pushing states to increase their individual fuel taxes and increase tolls. You will pay more at the pump, but once again, you will pay more for all purchased goods because the cost of trucking will rise again. Someone has to cover the cost increases and ultimately, it is the consumer.

The state of Oregon is working on mileage tax..A little thig called a tracking device will be installed[Orwellian,Big Brother is watching]on your vehicle and your driving will be sattelite observed and all data will become property of the state and you WILL pay more $ taxes.Sieg Hiel, now be a good Komrade and drive.

This is a tax-cut for the middle-class, right?
Since the Democrats control both houses of Congress and the Presidency, there is no reason for this tax to go through if they meant what they said about taxes.

When our government start raising taxes they do not know when to quit, look at how they did the cigarette tax and it has been proven by JFK if government raise taxes it causes a loss of revenue and when government lowers taxes it raises more revenue. And Bush has nothing to do with this.

I don't have a problem with it as long as it goes towards highway and infrastructure and nothing else, this will create a lot of jobs and rebuild our infrastructure at the same time which is in very bad shape, so we can kill two birds with one stone. Everyone get your thumbs down ready.

Gas went up over 30 cents yesterday. Why? I think as long as our currency is based on thin air and mark to market type schemes, we will never have any economic stability. Printing billions of dollars to cover the stimulus packages are going to lead to hyper inflation eventually. I feel that all this manipulation is only going to make matters worse. There is no effort to use any kind of stabilization and not even any talk of it for the future.

Shouldn't the government have to go by the rules of Sarbanes Oxley that businesses have to deal with? Was it just devised to keep the little people from knowing what is occurring within the company they work for? Nothing is normal anymore. The more globalized we have become, the less stability we will have and it is only going to increase.
Our taxes have little to do with it.

get used to higher tax,es the tax and spend liberals are now in power we should get rid of the general fund and have the government be accountable for all spending

It seems that they would take a hint people are traveling less because they can't afford too travel. So let's find a different way to rip them! Talk about Damn if you do and Damned if you don't. I saw the article about some states wanting to tax you on the miles you travel that crazy! many people have a fifty mile commute one way to work in the midwest, we don't have public transit, that doesn't seem right either.

I agree we all need a soap box when it comes to things like this regardless of party lines. They just don't know when to stop trying to drain us. What next start taxing how much air we breath based on our heart rate?
