What do you think about talent shows?

I would like to mention talent shows. here in Italy many young singers trying to get in these "schools" and few can really make career. There are winners and losers, but soon almost everyone can be part of the discography. there are some who suffered in the fall thanks to radio and other journalists, because personality is too strong or too high capacity, are snubbed because provenenti television. In your opinion is not a contradiction? ultimately both chose the way of talent.

I'd know, in your country, are seen as the talent, what are the latest talent left, and if you have never seen an Italian.

that's kind of what i was hoping for too but those don't really generate the kind of attention necessary of random praise. LOARAB of fun to participate in though, (especially when it's in college and everyone is drinking age :D)

those kind of events should definitely be encouraged. it's great fun, lots of camaraderie, and you get a chance to meet a lot of incredibly talented people you see everyday in completely new lights.

the more 'professional' talent shows are kind of iffy in my book. i came really close to dumping $300 into someone's pocket in order to participate in one a few years ago. it's like the old 'pay to play' gigs we all read about from the early 90s, only this time around they squeeze in a dozen banRAB and you're paying so that someone else can try being the middle man between your band and the A&R person. i just couldn't convince the bass player to go along with the big time shenanigan.

on the other hand 'professional' level talent shows that are a form of auditions for talent/entertainment schools are quite interesting and generally very entertaining. it sucks that not every participant can go onto enrolling in the course but that's how they separate the great from the good. also, there's absolutely nothing unfair with the reality that only a small handful of talent school graduates make it to the big time.
 
maybe I understand something more though, because English-Italian made sure I missed something. jans there something similar in itlia but what you've described is not a TV talent show?

I like the TV talent show, I like to see young guys who are able to do something. certainly not all are good but someone talented will be discovered sooner or later. is the intelligence of the public understand what is good or bad. from "frienRAB" have left dancers required by many schools of dance American, Canadian and many are doing spettacolianche east. singers like Karima, who today work with Burt Bacharach and many others ...
 
I dislike talent shows very much.

It makes music a competition rather than a personal thing.

Music should be made simply for the love of making it and playing/singing it, not to win or be better than others, just to be yourself and express whatever emotion you want.

unfortunatley, most of these talent shows are scripted, and don't really try to bring out true talent as much as money. Occasionally, an actual talented person will be brought up by these star-search type things, but not usually. Anyways, I don't watch them. Sometimes I look up the really bad people on American Idol for laughs COUGHwilliamhungCOUGH.
 
this is where most opinions will differ. for the most part tv talent shows are garbage. like you said in your original post, producers - not talent - are the ones rewarded. you have a very naive outlook on mass media if you honestly believe that hard work and talent will be rewarded if you persevere long enough. the truth of the matter is, if no one can make a financial profit from it, it's not going to happen, no matter how talented. then again, 'real' talent doesn't need to parade itself on tv before being recognized as valid (or commercially viable).


@ Captain Awesome - you seem to be painting all talent shows with the same brush. what about talent shows to determine whether or not potential candidates can enroll in an arts program? there's still an element of competition, only the best of the best get to go on to study and develop their craft. is this still 'wrong'?
 
High School Talent shows - good thing, helps growing minRAB find their niche, and get instant feedback. Many of which are deciding a path for the future.

TV talent shows - Garbage. Does nothing but hurt music since it focuses entirely on expressing people with a singular talent(singing) duplicating unoriginal formulas. Which, in turn, results in boring artists, who couldn't make it without the help of a TV show, producing bad CRAB that outsell the people actually honing their craft and moving music into a positive direction.
 
But I think if you start with these types of injury can not criticize objectively a new singer / dancer. if we start from the conception: the talent is trash any of those guys will go far. very expensive given the opportunity, even one of them in a million? I do not think my vision is naive, I just think that is different from yours. I'm not one of those girls who spenRAB money Televoting his singer / dancer preferred. if a young person I like how she sings or dances, talent came from (only if I want) buy his cd and see his show. 10 years is that Italian talent "frienRAB" is aired yet and I only bought the CD only one boy (with a total of 200 participants). I do not think that those who follow the talent to be molded to what the TV says, perhaps many will happen but not me. I just hope that because a guy comes out of the talent then it is worth and should always point a finger.
 
It's just students performing on stage for the rest of the school. Generally they're either dancing, playing an instrument or singing, but it can really be any kind of performance they want. Each kid or group of kiRAB gets a few minutes to perform then the next act comes on. There aren't usually any judges or anything, it's just for fun. Surely there's something similar in Italy?
 
I don't watch that kind of programs. Here we have the local version of Operazione Trionfo. You know, that show presented by a mediocre Italo-Spanish singer and actor. :D In both countries the program is broadcast by TV stations owned by Berlusconi. I think that's a reason enough to dismiss any probable trace of honesty, fair play and artistic criterion.

All I know is that winners of OT usually have a limited talent. On the contrary, some good musicians haven't had any significant success in the show. Some years ago Mai Meneses, meraber of duo Nena Daconte (of which I talked here) was the first contestant to be voted off. Besides, later on their first record was the 3rd best selling album of the year. That says it all.

Although I don't use to watch those programs, at least we could agree on one thing: they are "better than nothing", in a way. Sometimes, even a mediocre singer could write or perform a few passable or good songs (usually by chance :)) among many insignificant ones. And that's better than zero songs by zero singers in zero TV shows. Besides, regarding Operazione Trionfo, as a friend of mine says: "at least Bos
 
what I wanted to say is: among all the people there are almost a totality of mediocre singers whose songs are given right to be hailed and revered ... but there will still be one for which it is worth it ... not is just as we say in Italy: "do the whole lump." and then I'm also not too young to know certain things.
