When times get tough, some of us get tougher. Others play the blame game. As the economy becomes increasingly iffy, losing jobs and raising prices across the board, some individuals and organizations have started to target immigration as the source of all of our woes in the United States, claiming that immigrants are stealing jobs and using too many resources, straining the abilities of school districts, hospitals, transportation systems, law enforcement agencies and housing facilities to meet the needs of native inhabitants, let alone newcomers.
Anti-immigration groups have now gone so far as to run ads featuring a bulldozer tearing up pristine wilderness to make their point about overpopulation as a result of immigration. The ads are running in liberal publications like the New York Times, the Nation, the New Republic, the American Prospect, and Harper's, and are either funded or sponsored (or morally supported) by such groups as: the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR ); Numbers USA; Project USA; the Social Contract Press; the American Immigration Control Foundation; The California Coalition for Immigration Reform; the National Organization for European American Rights; the Stein Report; V-Dare; Voices of Citizens Together/American Patrol; Californians for Population Stabilization; and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Three of the organizations (FAIR, American Immigration Control Foundation and the Social Contract Press) have been identified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center , which was founded in 1971 as a civil rights legal advocacy firm and tracks such activity worldwide.
