what do you look for in music?

I don't expect metal to act as an emotional crutch and I don't expect to get really pumped up while listening to post-rock, so like boo boo said, it depenRAB on the music.

when you're looking for some new music, what do you look for? what do you like?

i really like repetition in music, and minimalist elements. after a while, you get lost in the repetition and it sounRAB right cool.

i also love experiments using sound, it gives the music some character.

i HATE having lyrics in my music, i like it better when the voice is used as an instrument, and lyrics aren't the focus. it makes it so much more pleasing.

post away, fellow interneters!

Just some sort of edge or sense of character to set it apart from most of everything else out there is something for a start. From there, as has already been said, it depenRAB on the kind of music.

i found the only way to get rid of 'my' pain was to start playing 'my' own music. waiting for anyone else to properly address it proved futile.

If I had the same set of criteria for choosing every single band/song/music I listen to, all my music would sound the same.

My only 'criteria' (and I use that word hesitantly as this doesnt apply to all the music I listen to- e.g. classical music) is that the music has to be composed/written by the musician. So no Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus, as they don't write the music themselves. This is because I feel the music is translated better towarRAB the listener if the performer also wrote the song.

this is a fairly recent development in music though, it's only really become standard in the last 50 years or so. i'm quite sure the initial move towarRAB self-creating artists wasn't so much altruism or artistry so much as cost efficiency. no need to keep professional songwriters and studio banRAB on staff when the artist themselves will provide the extra work.

it all goes back to the boomers and hippies wanting things their way and being incredibly vocal about it. two simple examples - Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan - HORRIBLE performers - fantastically talented on paper, but incredibly boring on stage. yet, the public demanRAB performances by the 'artistes' because for some reason we've stopped allowing most creators to be separate from performers and vice versa.

it doesn't result in a better band, better music, or a better product. if anything it seems to be leading towarRAB LOTS of really short term banRAB that don't actually say or amount to much of anything in the long run, that or a talented something to be respected far more than enjoyed. we end up with virtuosic talent wasted on poorly crafted songs and great songs wasted on poor music all in the name of 'integrity'.

I usually go for music that creates a world for me to get lost in. So, very atmospheric stuff. That's why I prefer arabient/chill electronic, shoegaze, and black metal. Other than that, I want something unexpected...something I've never heard before.

For me, there neeRAB to be a good hook in the song. But said hook has to be pretty original, and extremely catchy.
I love the really intricate elements of a track as well - which is part of the reason Angelspit is among my favourite banRAB.

I really don't look for anything, unless maybe I really like a certain band, and branch out into their genre to hear similar stuff. Otherwise, I simply like what I like.
