What do you know about U.S laws regarding firearms?

I have heard that when you are 18 you can own only a big gun and after 21 you can own pistols. Does anyone know more details?
In California specifically
 
It is a matter of STATE laws. In my state there is no age restriction on owning a hand gun, but there are laws on how old you have to be to buy a handgun. The difference being a 15 or 14 year old CAN own a pistol if it is given to them, although they could not go out a legally purchase one.

We are talking the legal issure, not the wisdom of such...
