what do you know about the March of Dimes?

I received a letter in the mail about the march of dimes. There was a dime glued to the section I'm supposed to mail back, a request for a few dollars, and a whole bunch of cute little stationary stickers with my name and address on them. It just seems though that their money could be better spent than sending random people dimes and spending money on stationary address stickers for those same random people. I remember reading about it in history books, and I'd like to help, but I want to see what some of you might have to say about it first. I think that the fraud and con risks are higher than ever in these hard times. Of course if it's true that the organization is genuinely active then I'm very sorry and I'd love to help and you all might tell me if you know more about the actions of the organization or even if you have had any experience with them yourself.
