What do you do with gold fish when they get too big for a 20G tank?

You get a bigger tank...

Fancy goldfish need 20 gallons per fish, they can grow to 8 + inches. Common, comet, and shubunkin goldfish need 50 gallons per fish, they can grow to 12 + inches.

No, you shouldn't put them in the lake, they would die immediately.

im sure that that is illegal but ive done it,

i had a turtle and the heater broke and we were ALSO broke, and so we could afford a new one, so we put him in a pond.

hopefully that helped him, but i like in ohio and that probably doesnt help him [if you know ohios weather AT all. =D]

Buy a larger tank or build a pond. If you are not willing to care for the fish than try to donate him to a school. Many schools will have ponds either out front or in an inner courtyard.

You cannot release a goldfish into a lake. It is illegal for a good reason. Do you commonly see goldfish in lakes? No, because they are not indigenous to the area. Introducing an invasive species is never a good idea (the cane toad, the snakehead fish...) While the odds of the goldfish surviving are small, if they did survive they would effect the native wildlife. That should be avoided at all costs.

I so wish that all you lame so called pet lovers would grow the fu3k up and become responsible.
If you can't afford or do not have the capacity to keep animals that you have grown apart from the environment then you must do the responsible thing and kill them.
I could make this more palatable by saying, 'sacrifice' them, or, euthanize them (ya'll are probably in favor of human euthanasia).
You raised it.
You are responsible for it.
Here's an idea...know what family gold fish belong to?
Carp!
As my prof in aquaculture said, "Carp is the number one source of protein on the planet!"
EAT IT!
Yeah, I know. I'm an insensitive jerk.
But, at least, I take care of my own mess and life would be sooooooooooooooooooo much simpler if you would do the same.
COWARD!

a wild lake? no! this is dangerous and illegal. you'll want a man made koi or goldifsh pond. try these...

schools
neighbors
garden store/club (may have pond, may sell them if you donate them, or ask for members looking for fish)
craigslist
freecyle
newspaper

Releasing any animal into the wild is very illegal. You should have researched the animal before you bought it. Not very responsible. Neither is your question about putting him in the lake.
