What do you do at anime festivals?

I'm thinking of going to the Animania Festival or Manifest, but I don't want to get bored there. What are you supposed to do? And what is a decent amount of money I should bring with me? :)

P.S. What are other anime festivals for 2011 in Melbourne, Australia?
