What do you do after you have your macbook hooked up to your TV?

So, my TV is an HDTV and i have the macbook hooked up with everything it needs.
I can see the startup background for macs on the TV, but whenever I try to play a movie or something, I can't.

What do I do to be able to see my screen on the TV?
