I live in southern Illinois and around here we call it "alleyhopping" sometimes it pays off but most of the time there's a good reason someone throws something away (like it doesn't work) I got a computer a few months ago and the motherboard was fried, but still useful for a couple of spare parts. While I haven't been alleyhopping in quite some time it is amazing what some people throw out. Also, as long as you dont make a mess of someone's yard or sidewalk/street most people don't care if you go thru their trash. I label some of my trash (like cat litter) so someone has an idea of what they are looking at. I also will label piece of electronic equipment "no good" or ''might be ok for parts". That way if someone goes thru my trash they dont haul offsomething that doesnt work. And obviously the best time to alley hop is summer late saturday night( saturday being the number one day for yard sales) Hope this helped.
