What do they all mean in the financial markets?

What is the NASDAQ, NYSE, the SMI? What do they all mean? Is these where shares are traded in their respective countries?? On their stock exchange? Ive really been having trouble really grasping this. Some one please give me indepth detail
 
There are many different places where shares are traded. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is one of the largest and well known and is located on Wall Street in New York. The NASDAQ is an exchange trading mostly smaller stocks - many dot com type companies. There are also commodities exchanges (the largest one is in Chicago) and foreign stock and/or bond exchanges in most every country.
