What do these symbolisms mean in the book 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'?

I'm writing an essay on what the some of the symbols mean in Girl with a Pearl Earring. The first one being, near the opening of the book, when Catharina knocks a knife off the table. This may mean that later on in the book, Griet and Catharina may have a disagreement.

How should I extend this point and what should I add to make it longer? Thank you very much, but I'm very stuck! English hasn't been my best subject. :S
