What do the Letters on Car Registration mean?

There are many cars that now have letters in front of the Year that they were registrated. i.e. AB53 ABC

Does anybody know what the first 2 letters represent/stand for/mean?

It is the area of registration.

Its the part of the UK that the car was first registered in, ie AB could be Birmingham, KL could be Darlington etc etc. These are not the real areas just examples of how the system works. You often see lots of "same" registration letters in the same town for that reason.

Its where the car comes from... you will notice most cars in Scotland start with an S (SK, ST, SL etc)
